Course Overview

Yoga instructorThe course includes the following training:

  1. Yoga Theory:
    • history and philosophy of Yoga,
    • human anatomy,
    • physiology,
    • nutrition, etc.
  2. Yoga Practical:
    • asanas (postures),
    • kriyas (cleansing),
    • pranayama (breathing) practice, etc.
  3. Teaching:
    • teaching methodology and
    • practice in providing instructional cues, etc.

Prior to certification students will complete a further 20 hours of Practicum teaching to gain experience and apply the course knowledge in a real teaching situation.

Syllabus

Asana Practice, Teaching Methodology, Relaxation and Guided Imagery

Principles of demonstration, observation, assisting/correcting, instruction, teaching styles, qualities of a teacher; and how to become a good and safe Yoga instructor.

Lineage is explored with respect regarding each student’s path. Throughout the training, teachers place emphasis on teaching methodology, body reading and patterning. It is necessary to emphasize safety for both teacher and student in this process.

Around 100 asanas and variations are covered. Relaxation techniques, pacing, voice modulation, music, and imagery are also taught.

Anatomy and Physiology

The major systems in the human body are covered to provide a basic understanding of how these relate to Yoga and how Yoga can help improve health and condition.Muscles, bones, organs, glands, nerves, cardiovascular, digestive and respiratory functions are covered. Chakras are also covered.

Philosophy, Ethics & Lifestyle

We share many personal experiences in studying and teaching Yoga. Traditional concepts of Yoga are explained in a modern context.
Ethics and lifestyle are emphasized and practiced throughout the course.

Mantras, Meditation, Bandhas, Eastern and Western concepts of diet and nutrition

Mysteries of the mind, techniques and obstacles to meditation are covered. Practical sessions of meditation are included to experience the wonders and blissfulness of meditation. Simple mantras are taught and the concept of kundalini and nadis and their relationship to the spinal cord.

Introduction to Teaching Practice

Students have ample opportunity to observe us teaching, as well as teaching each other during student teaching exercises in smaller groups and feedback concerning their teaching techniques.

How to see through the eyes of an observant Yoga teacher is a focus throughout this training. This is an important part of preparation for teaching.

Independent and Project Work

There are "homework" assignments for completion during non-teaching periods.

The course takes you to new places of understanding and you are encouraged to explore these through individual reading, writing and other artistic expressions as well as through asana and meditation practice.

Students will be required to build a portfolio with notes and photos of your favorite asanas.

Materials Required

We provide teaching notes and textbooks.

Students are advised to bring writing materials for taking notes and cameras.

A few sets of comfortable Yoga clothing are required.

While temperature in Langkawi averages 31 degrees C during daytime and 24 degrees C nights, students are advised to bring warmer clothes for visits to mountaintops and waterproof coats or jackets in case of rain.

Last but not least, do not forget shoes suitable for walking in the rainforest or climbing steep hills.
